Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy
8 November 2024

SFG President was  invited by University of Toronto - Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy  to give the prestigious Cadario Visiting Lecture in Toronto on 6 November 2024. He was also invited to speak at 5 different seminars and events with graduate students on his book A WORLD WITHOUT WAR a day after US elections were over. Sr Graham Watson chaired all the lectures. Prof Paul Cadario has created the lecture series, and personally travelled to Toronto to attend the event.

In addition to the Munk School, Massey College and Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History also invited Sundeep Waslekar and Ilmas Futehally for discussions on war and peace in the emerging geopolitical context. The students were very impressive, well informed of current and historical issues, and curious.

Some observations:

- Citizens diplomacy can contribute significantly to improving relations between countries even though the states are final arbitrators of global affairs.

- All antagonists in a war may claim that their own objective is peace and justice because the concepts of peace and justice are defined in fundamentally contradictory ways.

- The studies of international relations focus on geopolitical rivalries and wars but almost never on historical agreements aimed at making peace like Hague Peace Conference, Kellog-Briand Pact, McCloy-Zorin Accord

- The United Nations, other multilateral organisations and even universities all over the world look at global problems from a competitive national perspective rather than a civilisational perspective. How can my nation get the best deal in climate or health negotiations rather how can humanity together overcome such crises?

- If we look at wars of last few centuries we will find that there is a higher probability of invaders losing a war than winning it. Some universities need to undertake statistical-historical analysis of this phenomenon

- There is total intellectual bankruptcy in United Nations as well as the world universities in conceiving a reliable and operational conflict resolution mechanism which can resolve conflicts between big powers and establish sustainable peace.

- Artificial Intelligence will be a critical factor in war and peace of our times.
